Most people come to Koh Samui chasing one particular moment. The light goes soft and gold, the heat of the day lifts, and the whole bay turns the colour of a good cocktail. The only real question is where to be when it happens.
Silver Beach, also known as Haad Thong Takian, sits in a sheltered cove on the south-east coast of the island. The water is calm, the sand is pale, and the granite boulders at each end frame the view like a postcard. Being on the east coast, this is really a sunrise beach: the sun climbs out of the Gulf in front of you in the morning and, by evening, slips down behind the hills at your back. You will not watch it drop into the sea here, the west coast is where the island keeps that trick, but you get something quieter for it: the light turning soft and gold across the bay while the heat of the day finally lets go.
Come for the sunrise, stay for the evening
If it is the sun over the water you are after, come early. Facing east the way it does, Silver Beach is one of the better sunrise spots on the island, and not long after six the cove is yours, a coffee in hand and the Gulf lighting up in front of you before the day begins. For most guests, though, the evening is the draw. You do not need the sun to fall into the sea for golden hour to be worth it. The whole bay softens, the boulders catch the last colour, and the beach club settles into its best few hours. Our full guide to Silver Beach covers the rest of the day if you are planning one around it.
Get there before the colour starts
The colour starts well before the light finally goes. Aim to be seated by around 17:30 so you catch the slow build. That also lines up neatly with Happy Hour, when cocktails come down to a price that makes a second round easy. Order something long and cold; the Pina Colada served in a young coconut is our signature and suits the hour perfectly. Then stop looking at your phone and look at the water.
Stay for dinner on the sand
The nice thing about a table by the water is that you are already in the best seat for dinner. As the sky fades, the string lights come on and the kitchen moves into its evening service. Fresh seafood, Thai classics and a few Western plates all work well with the view, and the full menu is longer than you would expect for a spot this relaxed. And if it happens to be a Tuesday or Friday, the evening ends with a fire show on the sand.
Walk-ins are welcome, but the front row fills up fast on clear evenings. If the sky looks promising, send us a quick message on WhatsApp and we will hold a table near the water. Making a night of it? Check dates at the Beach Resort and the walk back to your room is a barefoot two minutes across the sand.
